Your actual review of the DVD doesn't seem to support this as it seemed you had someproblems with it but whitewashed over that because it is related to TDK.

Seems TDK and now anything related to it is getting a free pass.

I was a huge fan of his work when I was younger. While over time, my taste in artistic style has changed, I still greatly admired his strength in fighting an ailment for as long as he did while still keeping a presence in the industry. Rest in peace Michael. You will be missed.
Who's stupid idea was it to hold this and Flashback weekend simu

I would have like to go to both, but I didn't have the time to commit to two conventions in one weekend. Also, at the WALL*E screening last week, Capone mentioned a big Chicago screening they're going to announce soon and that those going to Wizard World would get a clue as to what it was. Any ideas?

We mentioned it in an article and then dedicated the Question for Discussion on it. I could've put up twelve pages of his covers and it wouldn't have been enough...giving an entire talkback for the fans to comment is much more meaningful than anything I could do or say.

Even though there was no Sony or MS presence, no playable games like Bioshock was last year (Intel had a big but underwhelming booth), it was still a great time. That Bendis vs. panel was the best one of the con and will be talked about for a long time to come. Honestly, Michael Turner's sad death cast a pall over the whole convention - to their credit they kept it going. I managed to speak to Bendis for a bit and he did mention that after the con was over there would be time to mourn their loss but they had a show to put on for others first. Wish I'd known you guys were coming; I'd have bought you a round. Perhaps next time. And you didn't pick up that Crow statue that everyone got??? For shame! :) And RIP, Michael Turner. Fathom was sold in the droves this weekend in pitiful remembrance of your excellent work. You will be missed. :(

He hauled himself out to con after con, even being very ill. Just because he enjoyed it. Had a great conversation with him about Battlestar Galactica, which he absolutely loved (who doesn't?) HE WILL BE MISSED. R.I.P. Mike!!!

I didn't find Gotham Knight to be entirely brilliant. I'll have an AICN Anime piece on it up later this week, in which I'll be saying that Gotham Knight didn't have the "name" creators that AnimAtrix did, and consequently, the results generally were not surpring. The people whose work you'd expect to be interesting largely were, and the creators whose resumes don't impresses, for the most part, did not produce impressive work. That said, if you have any interest in projects like Gotham Knight, or other anime created with a Western audiences in mind, it's well worth supporting the release and not simply watching it on YouTube. It's been said that Mind Game, one of the truly great anime movies, was never released in North America because a deal fell through after it was posted on YouTube.

Of course, I don't waste my time at the "exhibit" end of the hall, waiting hours for creators to scribble their name across my sketchpad or slogging through pointless panels either. And could the media guest list have been any worse? If this is truly a tentpole summer con, how's about getting off your ass Wizard and forking out the dough for some genre actors/actresses? Fucking Johnny Fairplay and some also-ran from that horrid "Heroes" show? Are you kidding me?

Pointless panels? Good grief. OK, then why were you there? Don't tell me you came to swap spit with Lou Ferrigno or those American Gladiator people. We all know these people come to these things, but if you're looking for celebs dude, you're in the wrong convention. On one hand you say that you don't want people to give you autographs and on the other you want "A-list" actors/actresses. Make up your mind.

I was in attendance all 4 days. However, on Saturday, I only arrived at about 2:45 p.m. and only stayed until 5:00 p.m. Saturday is the worst day to be at Wizard World, with the show floor overrun with attendees. I did not hear the announcement at all. I had no idea it was broadcast over the PA system.

He was younger than me by more than a decade and left this world much too early. He mixed that late '60s/early '70s Neal Adams realism with incredible pin-up/Vargas voom - the hottest looking female comic book characters along with Jim Lee and Ed Benes, as well as that super-hero ideal, too. Yet he also could capture horror and fantasy so well. Had he illustrated when I was 14, 15, I'd have wanted posters of his work to hang up on my bedroom walls. My heart goes out to his family and most avid fans, too.

Bendis/Johns was thrilling? Dude, you need to get out more. And why is it that comics fans in recent years feel the need to talk about how much they drink at these cons. That's the kind of boring shit jocks do.
And yes, the panels are crap.

Who wants to sit through hour upon hour of the same ol' comics professionals just schtumping for their latest company-wide crossovers? Or for fuck's sake, who would sit still for any of the canned bullshit Steve Sansweet gets paid to deliver? That man's picture is perennially under the entry "shill" in the dictionary. Unlike apparently some folks, I'm not at the con to sycophantically rub elbows with the creators and collect all their scribblings in my pathetic "sketch" portfolio. No, I'm there to actually shop. We get one decent sized comic convention in this town and I make the most of scouring every last dealer's booth to make sure my want list is decimated by show's end. I carted off 6 longboxes of material this year. I have no beef with the actual list of comics creators at the show. What annoys me is the fact that Wizard bills itself as a "media" convention and then sticks us with a bunch of D-list wanna-bes from reality shows to fulfill the "media" quotient. Cripes, I'd take the umpteenth airing of Walter Koenig's issues in place of the gaggle of pseudo-celebs that Wizard populates their autograph alley with these days.

I never met the man, but I was aquainted with a person that knew Turner. She told him of my osn's birthday, and he was nice enough to autograph a free hardcover copy of his book and FedEx it to me at his own expense. A class act, people...

To have last week started by the sad news of George Carlin's death, this news put a damper on the beginning of this week for me. I truly loved this man's work. While I never got into his solo series like Fathom, I loved every cover he drew for Marvel and DC. In fact, his work harkened me back to a day where an 8 year old would buy a comic because of how awesome the cover looked. Turner's style was exactly that. He gave a mixture of realism to his work without ever detracting from the comic look. He will be missed and I am hurt by the fact that I will never see another Turner cover soon. I will definitely be picking up his variant cover for Uncanny X-men #500. Thats for sure.

I don't really ever do comics as coverage. But with all the comics properties so hot right now. My editor told me to go cover it. I normally do politics. The highlight was that an old friend of mine is actually an illustrator for Marvel. It was funny running into each other.

i think ellis goes to cons as some sort of arrangement with avatar to promote his books with them. he's always at the avatar booth and never at the marvel one. it's a shame he's never come to baltimore since i have my trade of ocean signed by everyone except him. but yeah, i love him for the same reason, such an asshat.

Wow. Bitter. I used to read comics. Alot. I had every issue, variant cover, ashcan 0, -1 of Gen13, right up until that whole bs about the time warp. I loved the Tenth by Tony Daniel. Was really excited by the Cliffhanger spinoff label, until of course it was run into the ground by missed dates and inconsistencies. Was really into the Wildcats 2.0 facelift when Travis Charest was doing the art. I loved The Preacher, and when America's Best Comics came out with Top Ten, I was psyched. I loved comic books and suffered through what was probably one of the worst eras. I still bought them once in a while, but I was reading Adrian Tomine and manga for the most part. And actually, I dropped by my local store and opened up an account to get some stuff. It's not that I'm too cool to do comics, but when you spend your time writing about politics, its kind of weird when you get tasked to the Wizard World event instead of the pop culture writer. And as for my life being more interesting, well, apparently just yours. All you had to do this afternoon was to be bitter about what I wrote yesterday.
Clarification
by ChiTownBuff
Jul 1st, 2008

Perhaps I should clarify. I havbe't read comics in probably 5 or 6 years with any consistency? I had fun at Wizard World. Based on the people I got to talk to there, I am interested in getting back into reading comics. Yes, and its still weird for the political journalist to be sent to cover a comic book event. But of course, apparently, I have to pass some weird fanboy test. Kind of a weird way to offer encouragement for someone who wants to get back into the hobby. Tell you what. I requested I get sent to San Diego, if you're gonna be there, let me know. We'll have a beer, and you can tell me how elitist my attitude is. And I will level unrelated personal assaults at you. How's that?
