I'll admit that the latest season and the one before have actually made me laugh, and I think the writing is pretty good. It's hard to assess if these episodes are "good" though because it's good writing paired with shit plots because literally everything has been done at this point. If you had current writers doing old plots, I think they'd still be good, but again, you think an episode is bad because "Homer becomes a Youtube phenomenon" IS a shitty idea for a story, but when you actually look at the dialogue, you see it's pretty funny in fact. It's no King of the Hill or Venture Bros. though.

Really? Who can complain about the third season? It has had some of the best lines and scenes of the entire series. Last week's exchange between Brock and Dermott was hilarious. This week's pretty good, too. While it lacks the linearity and continuous from the second season, this season's better than anything else on TV. Also, I agree with DanielKurland. I want more Extra sessions.

The first time I watched the series straight through, I primarily identified with T.S. Venture, which is a painful process as most of you probably know. I am currently re-watching the whole series as well as keeping up with the new eps, but this time I'm mostly identifying with Dean Mark 16 or whatever number he is. So this episode was super cool what with the putting sleuthing above all else attitude and the chicks throwing themselves at him. However, the best line comes from T.S. "Now if only I could bottle that ass." Also, does anyone else think Brock was totally ready to go with that lady bodyguard if she would've just shut up and let him do his thing? This show is like night swimming in blood temperature water while you're girlfriend and the girl you're secretly into tread compare breast sizes on the dock while you float under a gazillion stars and you can hear The Beatles "Day In The Life" playing in someones backyard a few houses over.

The two natives bitching at one another was classic. That aside, this episode once again demonstrates that Doc and Jackson are not dicking around. They are expanding this universe, adding more and more backstory, and gearing up for a kick-ass fourth season. Who knew preamble could be this good?

I don’t think the suits at Warner’s actually know what they have lucked into. Public and Hammer are true artists and geniuses. There must be a VB live action movie. I think this could be a tremendous money maker for them. This flick could be made for less than 50 million dollars. You don’t need big stars. Most of the voice actors are good actors period. You could also film it “Monty Python Style” with cast members taking on multiple roles. You may have to do a little stunt casting for media attention like having Angelina Jolie play Molotov Cocktease but other than her and Dr. Girlfriend most of the existing cast is good to go. In keeping with the overall theme of failure the special effects could even be relatively inexpensive, Use matte painting instead of CGI and some fake looking models for the X-1, X2, Monarch’s cocoon etc to give it that retro feel. Have Public and Hammer team up to direct the movie with someone like Robert Rodriguez who has show that he knows how to bring a film in on-time and on-budget. Rodriquez has also demonstrated that he can collaborate with another artist and have respect for the original material. A funny action picture with three dimensional characters the audience can actually care about is a guaranteed money maker. GO TEAM VENTURE!!!

I LOVE the auxiliary characters in VB, but I was getting a tad bit worried the guys were straying too far from the core of the show. Then they go about bringing a classic episode like this. I just love listening to the Hank and banter ("Now you're all about--Go Team Boobies!") Furthermore, I love that Doc and Jackson use "failure" as a key theme to their show. But they really need to throw Doctor Venture a bone once in a while--he's not THAT bad a guy (and seemed to be a very likable child). In the long run I will be interested to see if the guys' themes on failure lead to a nihilistic conclusion or a more positive one a-la Job.

I don't know if the show needs to go THAT kitsch, but I think a somewhat retro feel would work. Maybe something along the lines of Sky Captain as a compromise? Or, maybe even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (as I feel it was too CG-heavy for an Indiana Jones film, but might work for a piece like this.)

I've enjoyed the third season so far, but it lacked that certain "what the fuck???" of certain eps from the first two. THIS ep, this was a nice blend of the current backstory building AND the balls-out crazy of the best S1 and S2 episodes. I laughed almost the entire time. If continuity weren't such a bear, it'd be interesting to see how Triana would react to hearing about the twins...

This episode was exactly what I've been wanting a season. A Venture bro's focused ep where they get out of the compound. I thought besides some really great lines, there was really really good line DELIVERY this episode. When Dean came up the ladder and Brock was like "Oh it's... DEAN... hey dean" like he was actually a little excited that Dean was there to hang out. Fantastic.

I think one reason the line delivery is so strong is because Doc and Jackson actually respect the guys they're working with. For example, Patrick Warburton is so typecast for his monotone beefy voice he rarely gets a chance to vocalize any nuance in his characters. But when you listen to him in VB you can almost tell he's having a blast doing it, because he gets that opportunity to add some layer to what could be another two-dimensional beefy character.

I agree, I mean I know the voice acting for this show is always top-notch. And that's because you can tell everyone is doing this because they enjoy it, not just for a pay check. That's half of the humor of the show, not just the great lines, but how well they are said. All that being said, I thought this episode had the strongest readings this season I think, Possibly everyone was really getting back into their characters? Monarch has been great the whole season though. Or maybe it's just that we haven't gotten a lot of focus on Brock and the boys till recently.

the opener with Rusty Venture pursued by blow-gun toting spear-carrying natives was right out of the opening sequence from Jonny Quest.

Actually, legend has it, from the prototype series that pre-dated Quest and was the only scene in the opening credits sequence that was never actually used on the actual show. Nice to see it wind up somewhere. Even if what would have seemed racist during the civil rights movement now reads as parody in this supposedly "PC age".

Much better than the barely audible commentaries from season 1 & 2. Did anyone else think that maybe "Nancy" and "Drew" are brother/sister twins ? I've liked them all, but I have felt that they've been very backstory-heavy. Which is good for the narrative aspect of the show, but those episodes have lacked a certain "go for broke" undercurrent. This last episode was brilliant in that it gave us backstory, planted potential future seeds, AND went for big laughs. Maybe it's that there was more overt parody in this ep versus the prior eps, which have felt more like sitcom episodes. I think you need to calm down and recognize that not everyone who loves the show thinks every episode is the bee's knees...

David Spade as Rusty Venture. Kevin Durand (Lost's Martin Keamy) as Brock Samson. Shannon Doherty as Dr. Girlfriend. John Lithgow as Dr. Orpheous. Uma Thurman as Molotov Cocktease. William H. Macy as Billy Quizboy. Christina Ricci as Triana. Richard Roundtree as Jefferson Twilight. Sammo Hung as Kano. Sean Connery as Colonel Horace Gentleman. Ray Romano as 24 and Kevin Smith as 21. Steve Buscemi as Jonny Quest.

As for who should play Hank and Dean Venture, do I seem like someone who has any idea of who todays crop of 16 year old actors are? I don't watch that Disney channel shit.

As much as I would pay money to see Kevin Smith in a bee costume bantering with Jay who is also in a bee costume (It has to be Jay! Ray Romano?!?!), a live action version of Venture Brothers would be fucking horrible. This works precisely because they have the freedom to be absurd and riff as they want and on what they want. The only way these characters should ever see the big screen is as an animated movie that isn't expected to make a shit-load of money. Otherwise the pressure of the other option would kill this delicate butterfly.:D

There's no reason to think of anyone as Brock Sampson when Warburton fits the bill already. Sure, Durand's a good psycho, but why replace the voice actor when he looks the part? Brock blond wig on Warburton's head and there you go. Ricci's too old for Triana. You'd need one of those aforementioned Disney actors. And I don't particularly like Doherty, so I'm going to recast with Jennifer Connolly. Though I'd have some doubts about her comedy chops. I'd say Parker Posey since I know she can do comedy AND she's already done the Jackie O outfit (House of Yes), but I don't know if she's voluptuous enough.

Have to give you credit-- I think you're right about Quymm and Dr. Venture being siblings. The more you look for it, all the signs pointed there: Quymm's mother is with Colonel Gentleman, a homosexual, and says that he's not her child's father. She has the Venture hair, and Doc Venture and her mother got it on during the party and fell on the kids while making out-- a kind of glaring physical clue. I hadn't even considered it, though, till you mentioned it.

Doc and Jackson are such excellent writers I'd put down my 10 bucks NOW for any movie they'd write -- but part of what I like so much about their work is that it's so extreme it really wouldn't work live action. Whether a new concept (in live action or animated) or an animated Venture Brothers movie (Hell, if Aqua Teen Hunger Force get one ...) the big screen is waiting for Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick.

a live action flick would probably be a goof. my casting suggestions were pretty much all off the wall and so many of the characters on this show are so distinctively not quite normal looking that going live would lose a lot.

That said, a Ventures movie - animated or live action - just might get me back into the theaters again. And I haven't gone to see a movie since Rocketeer.

Live Action
by InActionMan
Jul 6th, 2008
08:53:32 PM
I obviously don't think that live action would be a mistake. The quality of any end product follows directly from the quality of the execution. Ang Lee Hulk movie poor execution (director did not understand the material or did not want to understand it.)vs. 2008 Hulk movie. If the budget is kept down and given a February or other low preassure release date the studio will not expect it to be a big summer or holiday tent pole and the suits will probably leave Public and Hammer alone to do their thing. With a live action "Jonny Quest" movie and all the other super hero flicks of late the genre is ripe for parody. The recent "Superhero Movie" did not fit the bill. The super hero genre needs to be parodied by people who know and love it like Public and Hammer. The already established "Ventureverse" would be a great way to do it. As long as the Venture Brothers isn't handed off to some hack like Akiva Goldsman and they stick with the original cast I think we have a winner.

The common theme appears to be who the mother of the Ventures. Who is Dr. Venture's mother? Who is the mother of Hank and Dean?

It's been implied that the female bodyguard (I forgot her name) is the mother of Hank and Dean. But we also know that the Venture Bros. have been repeatedly cloned. So consider this: Maybe Dr. Venture and Brock are the parents of Hank and Dean... that is, Hank and Dean were created by Dr. Venture from the combined DNA of himself and Brock.

Also to me the female bodyguards voice reminded me of the mother of the big kid from last weeks ep., but maybe it was just my ears that made them sound alike.

and a live action or full length animated feature would have to be watered down to bring the general viewing public up to speed. There is too much back story. This is no Simpsons with a well known cast, back story and 17 year old history. I know that ATHF did the feature thing, to a limited audience, but I think it would be just as well for Cartoon Network to air an expanded episode on air. And NO live action, please. That never translates well (ie The Flintstones).

And I'm showing my video game geekness here, but did anyone catch the Lara Croft move (forward cartwheel) on the tree branch by Dr. Quymn? Followed by the lovely "leech kiss".

I thought for sure the 'Wereodile' was going to be Crime-o-dile contracted out to scare off the natives. So disappointed there, but the episode was hilarious. They even brought back Brock's super-short cutoffs, and loved the scene mentioned earlier about Brock being happy at the thought that Dean showed an interest in what he was doing. Didn't think about Dr. Qyumn being Rusty's sister, but it makes sense. Between her and Jonas Jr. it seems like all of Jonas' offspring got the great genes except for Rusty.

Could easily be Rusty's sister, i think there were a lot of clues there, but you're wrong Skimn, I do not think that the twins are Rusty's. He said himself that he hadn't seen her since they were 10 years old. My bigger question, the tribe gave Hank a circumscision, but wasn't he already circumcised? Remember when Quizboy had to operate on Deano's sack and Hank said, "Gross, did he see that hideous dog dork of yours?" and Rusty yells, "Hank! Don't brag about your circumcision."

You're right, the cloning works. Poor Broken Arrow. I also loved that they released the Orangutan back to the wild, but he's still wearing his boxing gloves.

tend to really showcase the talents of the creators: Tag Sale, Past Tense, the Season 2 season finale, etc. They operate really well with quick scene bursts that jump from group to group or character to character--which usually accumulate to a larger cumulative pay-off. In that sense, I see it as having that Arrested-Development vibe to it at times (which is also very good and greatly under-appreciated). So if you dig those types of episodes, you're going to LOVE season 2--but I won't spoil it for you.

And I think this one may have been the best of this season thus far. Although the O.S.I episode was pretty awesome too.
How are the ratings?

Is this the most watched "Only Adult Swim" show? I want to see a lot more of VB. It's the only thing worth watching this summer. It's the show I love to watch, but now nobody else would get from my circle of friends. I watched this right after the Doctor Who finale. I had a huge smile on my face during both of those and my gf thought I'm nuts. She just couldn't get something like this. And that makes me feel ever so special.
Cloverfield, unfortunately it's Family Guy

that is the most watched Adult Swim Show. Even during the season opener a few weeks ago a Family Guy re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re- re-run beat it in the ratings. However, VB had a very good (albiet distant) second place. However, I think the show is getting a HUGE amount of people watching it on Friday on The Fix. I know they keep an eye on those numbers, but they don't report those at AS in the bumps or anything.

...is still not big enough. I'm going to do this until the population in here rises a bit. Did Brock give Hank that bass? Does anyone recall where the bass guitar came from?

Thats what she said...wait nevermind. The tb does seem bigger then it has been lately. So thats at least something. No I can't recall a guitar before.I do think Hank and Dean are brothers and are most likely both Dr. Ventures.Especially after last weeks episode with Dr. venture saying he took the cancer out of billy's clones DNA.Also after sixteen or so clones he should have noticed different dna.

Pretty sure the one on top was a dude. Poor Dean...

She's even got the voice already! And I second Ray Romano. (Of course, a live-action VB movie would probably be a disaster like Aeon Flux was.)

-The stuffed bra

-The man-hate in the camp

-The mysterious "semi-identical" twin reference

-The general creepiness of the whole situation

-Because, wouldn't that be Dean's luck?

The stuffed-bra thing is just a visual joke on teenage girls. Semi-identical twins are a real thing, BTW. I think it's much funnier that Dean freaked out because his naivete made him believe the attempted seduction was an "attack".

There was side boob on Drew. Not a dude. Just a joke that she wasn't what "she appeared to be" and that this was probably Dean's first boob. Also, all chicks are wereodiles.

KCViking: the line from the yard sale episode about Depeche Mode is a CLASSIC!!!

Now about Dr. Mrs. Monarch's voice, it is based on Tony Curtis, who was in "Some Like It Hot."-----later-----m

Crap! I completely missed the Depeche Mode line.I think I missed about 10 minutes of every ep. 'cause I was laughing... I've gotta go back and watch season 1 again! I had it on good authority(stfuDonny & harrys_site_sucks) that this was a well written show, but , no one mentioned how fuckin' hilarious it was! I'm off to watch again before this t.b. becomes too spoilerific for this V.B. newbie.
Oh yeah...

It's old HTML. Type < p > but with out the spaces. And don't put a space between the period and the next sentence.-----later-----m
