I love the original with my very soul but for a more contemporary audience this change makes sense. I for one look forward to this remake despite my love of the original. The trailer is interesting and the cast is fine considering the robotic nature of Keanu's charcater and the immense talent of Connely and Hamm. I think this can be really good if handled correctly and it is not dismissive of the themes that make the original so special.

It's movies like these where I don't mind the remakes, current effects make these classics fun for a new generation, which doesn't ruin the old movie, it makes the old movie MORE important because it can transcend generations and be fun and enjoyable for each new one. Now THATS a classic. So I'm not opposed to this and will probably enjoy it, similar to how I enjoyed War of the Worlds. Not saying it will be a classic, but a fun event flick, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I know it's gonna happen sooner or later but I still dread eventually hearing that someone is remaking that classic 50's giant ant-in-LA movie, "Them."

And Skimm, the earth was warmer before our 100+ years of industry. Think about it, when AP writes "The hottest year in 150 years" think "It was hotter 150 years ago."

When you read about the effects of global warming in the paper it is ALWAYS speculation. That is what I mean about critical thinking.

Deep ice core samples have shown a drastic increase of carbon in our atmosphere, timelining it at about the industrial revolution and forward. I'm not saying nature does not play a significant role, via volcanic activity, animal methane, solar flares, etc. I'm just saying you can't dismiss our role in the environment.

As for humanity's role in the environment:

Activists and zealots constantly shrilling over atmospheric carbon dioxide are misdirecting attention and effort from real and potentially addressable local, regional and planetary problems.

Yet Indiana Jones will still kick both of their butts. Does that help or hurt your argument?

Also, Wall-E's gonna get at least one Oscar. What's Hancock gonna be up for? Visual effects sucked. I can't remember any score except "Get Out the Way," and sound design was pedestrian at best. So, they will equal box office and people will forget Hancock in 2 years (like "I am Legend"). What's more important? Good night.

quite honestly, the amount of "legitimate" scientists who don't think that humanity is at least partly responsible for climate change is barely higher than the amount of "legitimate" scientists that don't believe in evolution.

the difference is, most people who don't believe in evolution and make up some awkward and spurious pseudo-scientific claims, do so for religious reasons. as for the people who adamantly ignore evidence of global warming and humanity's part in it...maybe they all just suffer from paranoid personality disorder, and therefore just want to find the weirdest explanation for anything.

in all honesty, I would LOVE to have someone do an informal study to see how many people who don't believe humanity is contributing to global warming, also believe in bigfoot and the loch ness monster. throw creationism in there too, why not.

you people will be looking upon in a couple decades the way we looked at people who rallied against the civil rights amendment. apples and oranges, maybe. but you're gonna feel the same historical derision they do.

But it's true, I'm sure the studio is saying "fuck those internet nerds" when they green light these projects, they know damn well we're not the ones they're marketing it to and we're not the ones (largely) paying to see it.

Often times people on this site forget that there are other people in the world who go to see movies besides them.

Who in their right mind would consider remaking The Day THe Earth Stood Still without Gort? Gort is an iconic Science Fiction character, who in their right mind would consider not having him?

Movie studios seem to forget that there is a reason these movies are the ones they are remaking - because they were popular. If you are remaking a movie that was pretty dreadful (Hello Oceans 11) then feel free to change it as much as you like. Remaking a classic? Don't change a damn thing.
