Phelps vs. Poseidon
by nora inu
Aug 15th, 2008
10:38:39 PM
Intrepid NBC reporter Andrea Kramer reports that, from the depths of the ocean, Poseidon, God of the Sea, has revealed that some 23 years ago while on a godly survey of Chesapeake Bay, He strolled onto land in Baltimore and lo and behold, fell in love with a mortal woman. Her name was Debbie. Poseidon stayed with Debbie for a while, long enough to implant his Godseed within her, but the call of the ocean drew him away from his mortal lover. Poseidon tells Andrea that he is proud of his son, Michael...proud, but threatened. He wishes it known throughout the world that there is only one God of the Sea and it is Poseidon. Therefore he challenges his son, Michael, to a 400 Individual Medley, anytime, anywhere.

First of all, I am getting a little tired of all these geek sportswriters saying that Phelps is the greatest athlete in history. That nobody has ever done anything close to these feats. Uh, Lance Armstrong anyone? They were saying the SAME thing- that his heart beats differently than "mere mortals", etc etc. Anybody comparing the two? Nope. I hear things like "Is he Joe Montana?" For some reason just pisses me off. It makes me realize how much the media controls what we think about things.

Secondly, and more importantly, these games are in China. Fuck China. A bunch of bloodthirsty communist savages (the government not the people).

He WON that race. If you dumbasses saw the tape in slow motion, you should see that Cavic had glided to the wall while Phelps and his really long arms reached it first. You can even tell it by the underwater camera that NBC had, they really showed how it happened. So you guys who said he lost must can't see that well because I certainly saw it with my own eyes that he won that race. Michael Phelps is one of the greatest swimmers to ever win a race and even Mark Spitz who had the record for the most gold medals in swimming is very impressed by him and he doesn't mind if Phelps beats his record either. It shows how really humble he is and how Phelps is also. I have never seen a human being swim like that, he's got to be part dolphin or something, because he's definitely not human at all. He's incredible, like he's Aquaman!!! I mean who eats 12,000 calories a day?!!!! GO MICHAEL PHELPS!!!!!

Yes he won and I am VERY stoked for him, but you can't blame people for being a touch (pad) skeptical till all the facts were revealed, after all it was so close the human eye couldn't see it at normal speed and even in slow motion from multiple angles it took a while to see it clearly. It's healthy skepticism because I'd rather he was proven to have won beyond a shadow of a doubt so no cloud hangs over his achievement wouldn't you?

Seriously, I respect sports junkies who watch others breaking a sweat while eating junk food on their couch, but the whole '08 edition is a scam. A peaceful competition held in a fucking dictature? Paralympics in a country that contains world's largest community of physically disabled people, relegating them on skid row if not letting them die altogether? Giving them rating points and thus helping them in their effort of legitimacy is like going to the Clone Wars opening night: easy money right in the oh-so wrong pockets.

We were in the days after Sept 11 - and the country's security and fear inducing television made the country feel so uptight - China felt positively free by comparison. Olympic coverage

Harry, I too am an Olympics junkie. There are moments in Olympic sports that quite often bring me to tears, and, until the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, no other sports programming has ever done that. This moment was one of those that I will always remember. That said I find I must lodge my complaint about NBC’s version of Olympic coverage. I remember fondly the coverage as it appeared on ABC in my childhood, probably through rose-colored glasses. What I remember is seeing the sports, all of them, in their entirety with little or no “fluff” pieces about the competitors. That is what I want, even if it has to be delayed for later broadcast. Show every sport, every competitor, in its entirety. Hell, I’d pay for a DVD of an Olympics that had that. The drama of the win means less when the loser is just a name on a roster. I suppose I don’t mind the fluff stories on occasion, but there is too much of it. I do remember a time the fluff became an embarrassment for a network, and if I recall correctly it was still on ABC, was during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. The first running of the Woman’s Marathon had five or so competitors that were expected to be the top five or so finishers. A marathon is long for broadcast and so the network created the sappy stories about these five women to fill in the dull images of those running. The mistake they made was to discount an unlikely runner who took the lead early on and stayed there. That runner was Joan Benoit-Samuelson, and you could hear the cringe in the announcers’ voices every time they had to cut away from the leader to another clip about the person now running in 25th or so.

Speechless - Michael Phelps is the BEST Olympian ever lived
by BadWaldo s Revenge

Mike Phelps have a great, rich life ahead of him, when he graduates from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a degree in sports marketing. He will best Tiger Woods as the wealthiest athlete in history. Apt comparison as the Michael Jordan of competitive swimming. Despite my anti-American feelings towards U.S. government's wrongdoings in foreign policy clusterfuck and failure to maintain fiscal control, I cheer America. America will always be the greatest nation in the world, despite the evil administrations and corrupt Washington-New York politics. Harry, you are so right about this in the Superman/Lex Luthor parallel. This race is one of the most astonishing in sports history besides Red Sox winning World Series in 2004 and Paul Hamm's mind-blowing comeback in all-around men's gymnastics at 2004 Olympics in Athen. Maybe next time Chicago Cubs reach World Series after decades of failure. Victory is sweet when it is gained. Training to build and master skills and secure victories. It's what made America great in the number of achievements in breaking time records and collecting enough medals to outgun China. Here's to Mr. Phelps' 8th gold medal and make history. America is truly great when feel-good stories are the outcome that impress the world enough to bow in respect.

140 Posts and not one word about Juicing. WOW! Swimsport beside Cycling and Athletics is the most doping infested sport there is. i admit that phelps got the best technique (hands down) - but every time i see or hear about the so called documentaries regarding the "superhuman" qualities of athletes like phelps or armstrong, i laugh out loud ;-) i mean: COME ON! You can`t be that naive. "The Heart pumps different ... the lung is extremely large ...". In any other cases these would be birth defects. Its really funny that e.g. Armstrong didn`t won anything before his illness despite his "superhuman"-lung. When Phelps was asked after winning the second gold within 2 hours why his body doesn`t seem to need any time to recover after such an exhausting first race he just shrugs his shoulders and says: "i don`t know - just is". Let me tell you - in professional top-class sport there is no such thing as "i don`t know"; there are no mysteries about an athlete within a team. every detail is listed and on record. And that is the reason that i don`t enjoy watching sports anymore. these days (and probably the whole time since the 80ies) worldrecords don`t mean a thing - and thats a pity!

for serious athletes in timed events, it's an eternity. I was a downhill racer well into my early 20's, and that one one hundredth of a second often meant the difference between glory and defeat. Those fractions of moments caused me great joy and great depression in my early adulthood, as they did many others. It is so brief a quantity that it seems more like a concept then a reality, but it's a hell of thing. Anyway, Phelps is the man and here's hoping it takes it all the way to eight.

The logo for the games is horrible and has caused epilpetic fits in some children. By then time 2012 happens Milliband will be the leader of the country. Even though I disagree with Bengals WR Chad Johnson that he could beat Phelps in a race, he did say something very true: How many innercity kids have a chance at making Olympics because they don't have money growing up to train for these sports? How many kids could go to these schools and train like these girls in Gymnastics? Swimming? only track and field do you see any African-Americans in the Olympics, because anyone can go out and run in their neighborhood. I mean seriously, half of these events are by people that started at a young age and you don't even know what the majority of the population would do if they grew up in the same circumstances. In Russia, and now in China, they find these kids early, and train them to be the best, we still have the freedom to do that or not by choice of our parents.

I mean seriously, who cares? First of all, it's swimming. I know he's winning all these golds but it's only because swimming has like 60 different events. Basketball doesn't have a shooting competition, a dribbling competition, a passing competition, etc. But swimming has all these competitions which gives Phelps the chance to win all these medals. It doesn't mean he's the best Olympian ever. It just means that Swimming has too many events.

Phelps and Dara Torres are both in a new program where they are tested after EVERY race. Their blood samples are also stored on file to be tested and re tested for the next 8 years. They are being tested for drugs now and shit that can be found in the future. They are even tested for potential gene manipulation. So stop shitting ok his achievements. Spitz record was bound to be broken. At least it's by a fellow American who isn't a douchbag and who earned his credit by working for years. Also it's amazing how naive some of you can be. Gear/Roids don't give u special abilities. They just help your recovery times so you can train harder. You still have to put in work. I can start a cycle now, doesn't mean when I'm done I can swim like Phelps or hit a ball like A-Rod. Stop shitting on his amazing accomplishments because you are a fat lazy fuck who would rather unravel a non mystery of a Clone Wars Embargo instead of trying to run a 10 minute mile. Lazy whiny bitches.

But not for the flat chested jailbait, as one might assume. No, the women's gymnastic comp is by far the most dramatic. When these people fail, it's absolutely traumatic for them, and it's all laid bare. Bizarre closeups of their faces before and after show pure terror, determination, heartbreak and triumph. And there's a sense of real rivalry here, these kids do not want anyone else to succeed and barely contain their schadenfreude when a competitor eats bar. Where all the other sports have an air of friendly sporting competition, the gymnastics don't. And it's probably because they're saturated with an aura of 10 years worth of parents telling their child how important it is to 'be the best' and never fail, which accompanies any children's competition.

Exactly. Even assuming that Phelps will get 8 golds, which is an amazing achievement, Bolt has eclipsed everything that Phelps has achieved...and the scary thing is he was easing up at the end...he could have gone to 9.4 if he hadn't started showboating just before the end.

And he's 21...imagine what he will be like in 4 years...I have this strange feeling that Bolt is going to take on the impossible and try to break the 9 second barrier at some stage in his career.

When Michael Johnson won gold in Atlanta, he ran the second hundred in 9.2 seconds...that was from a running start obviously...I think Bolt could do it from the blocks and maybe even challenge 9 seconds in a few years if he keeps developing.

I also have the feeling that he may break Johnsons amazing 200m record.

Ironic, isn't it? The difference though is that the media here has their own biases- nobody is telling them what to say. The government isn't controlling what makes the news that day. No, our media is simply biased and full of massive egocentric bastards. Is there a difference? In the end, I would say yeah. Because as much as the media fauns over a particular candidate, the second they smell blood, no matter who it is, they go in for the kill. Their egos are bigger than their party loyalties.

From a Canadian, who lives in Australia, whose absolutely obsessed with the Olympics and everything related. My country has only won 3 medals yet I find it somewhat unfortunate that there is so much lack of interest or even hate for the Olympics in this forum and in the USA (please be assured that I am not trying to stereotype the American people and I appologize to all those who are attentively watching this wonderful time of ever 4 years). Look, I'll be the first to admit that I don't follow these sports regularly. However, I never feel prouder as a person to watch, encourage and commend these Olympians in their accomplishments during this time. I offer my utmost respect to every single person who can pursue their passion in a way that Phelps and every other athlete can. I don't care where they're from or what sort of money is involved. Sure, the higher the resources, means the greater results. But you cannot dismiss the unbelievable accomplishments that are occurring on a daily basis. Its an incredibly rare time. I admire Harry in using this medium to express his emotions in this amazing race. I would have done the same if given the resources. With piratically nothing invested in this race or Phelps' feat, I was still jumping up and down on my couch yelling at my TV hoping for him to succeed. To be a witness to such a moment and realize that there are people in the world capable of such surreal accomplishments in nothing but encouraging to us. I feel sorry for anyone who cannot take pride in these experiences.

They are not just on NBC, but MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Universal HD, and Telemundo. So if u missed Bolt's race, chances are it was shown on another channel in the NBC Universal network of channels. And as far as people bitching about NBC shoving Olympics down our throats. How is it that these games are the highest rated in 8 years? Stop talking shit. Americans love the games. Gives you a senseof pride when people from our country make it to the podium. When Nastia and Johnson won Gold and Silver it was great fucking television even if you hate gymnastics. And Phelps is really driving the ratings through the roof. He isn't a passing fad. America loves him. He came to a local college here in NYC to visit and speak to swimmers. He got into the pool and blew the schools record away. All the kids training were excited to meet him. Also with regards to African American Swimmers, most high schools in NYC have access to pools. It's just many kids aren't interested in swimming. It's like the people who bitch about the lack of diversity in the FDNY. I have a friend who is a higher up in the FDNY and he's Latino and he says that minorities just don't apply to take the exams. So they have to spend more money just for urban outreach and yet they still aren't interested. You can't say people who train for the olympics are privileged. Because Venus and Serena learned to play tennis on broke down concrete courts in Compton.

The only way the olympics should matter is if they were held the same way they where held back when they started, with the swimmers swimming in lakes rather then million + dollar swimming pools designed to minimize current flow.

I would say swimming is a sport because it is direct competition instead of passive competition. You finish first, you win. Gymnastics on the other hand, that is not a sport. You do something and the judges give you a score based on how pretty it was. If your prettiness score is better than the other guy's prettiness score you win. Now that is a faux sport. But go look up how many medals they give out for gymnastics.
